(Juneau) There is a new alderman in the city of Juneau’s Second Ward, again. Curt Arndt was sworn-in Tuesday night to fill the remainder of the vacancy created by the abrupt resignation of Adam Smerecki. Smerecki was appointed in October to fill out the term of Alderwoman Kendra Hayden however he stepped down before ever attending a meeting. Arndt’s term ends after this April’s election. Mayor Dan Wegener says it was important to fill the vacancy because of the committee requirements that come with the position and some committee’s may not be able to reach a quorum without the seat filled. He was placed on the Recreation, Public Safety, Fire and Police and the Blue Zones committees. Arndt has indicated has willingness to serve a full term come spring but he has already missed the deadline to appear on the ballot. He can run as a registered write-in but if he does not take that route the mayor has said that he would be open to re-appointing him.
