(Columbus) Multiple law enforcement agencies in Dodge County engaged in pursuing a suspect tied to a theft complaint Thursday. It started at 2:19pm when the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office received a report from the Columbus Police Department of a theft that occurred in the city. The suspected vehicle was later located around 2:24pm in the City of Beaver Dam and police attempted a traffic stop on Highway 151 near Industrial Drive.
The vehicle fled into the city and officers as well as sheriff’s deputies engaged in a pursuit. Due to the speed of the vehicle the chase was terminated. About twenty minutes later Fox Lake police spotted the car entering the city and began a pursuit, which also ended due to speed.
The vehicle fled to Highway 68 towards Waupun and at 2:51pm it was again located by police, and again a chase began. While attempting to turn east on Jefferson Street, the vehicle struck a curb which disabled it. The driver, who was reportedly identified as 32-year-old Justin Carter-Smith of Milwaukee, fled on foot but was taken into custody several blocks away.
A passenger was arrested at the scene, without incident. Sheriff Dale Schmidt says Carter-Smith is facing charges of Eluding as well as several drug related charges. He says the incident remains under investigation by multiple law enforcement agencies and there may be additional charges to follow.
The sheriff extended his thanks and commended all law enforcement agencies involved. Schmidt says this incident was an excellent example of interagency collaboration working together to hold those who commit crimes accountable.
