Mountin’s Piggly Wiggly Under New Ownership

8/14/17 – After over five decades of operating grocery stores, the owners of Mountin’s Piggly Wiggly in Mayville have retired. Jerry Mountin and his wife Pat began their career at his parent’s grocery store in Juneau – Mountin’s Food Land – in 1965. The couple took it over full-time by 1968 and became affiliated with Piggly Wiggly in 1974. In 1985, the Mountin’s purchased the Mayville store and relocated to its current location four years later. By 1998, the couple sold the Juneau store and focused on Mayville. That all changed this weekend, when the ownership of the store was transferred to Curt Schmidt, who had been the store manager for the past 11 years and is one of only three store managers since the store opened. Mountin says a lot has changed over the years as the industry has shifted from mom-and-pop stores to big-box stores, often times losing that connection to the community that he has found so important. Mountin says the transfer of ownership was being done through a stock purchase as opposed to an asset sale which means there is no change in employment status for workers and customers will continue to see the same Mountin brands on store shelves. Even the name of the store is staying the same.
