(Caledonia) A motorcyclist was killed while attempting to pass a semi in the Township of Caledonia Monday. Deputies with the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the crash on Highway 33 near Tritz Road just after 10am. The initial investigation showed the motorcyclist attempted to pass the semi tractor-trailer at a high rate of speed in the westbound lane of 33. At the same time, the semi began turning left into the driveway of a gravel pit. The two vehicles collided and the motorcycle rider was thrown roughly 50 yards from his bike. The 32-year-old was later pronounced dead at the scene by the Columbia County Medical Examiner’s Office. Identification is being withheld pending notification of family. The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office say they received several driving complaints near the crash scene just before yesterday’s accident describing a motorcycle operating recklessly and at a high rate of speed. The crash remains under investigation but authorities say speed appears to a major contributing factor. Assisting at the scene was the Wisconsin State Patrol, Portage Fire Department, Divine Savoir EMS and Blystone’s Towing.
