1/9/12 – The mild winter has the ports of Superior and Duluth wondering what will happen when the shipping season begins this spring. Lake Superior has very little ice cover. And that could mean lower water levels and lighter cargoes. Adele Yorde of the Duluth Seaway Port Authority says there’s evaporation on the big lake due to a gap between air-and-water temperatures. And without ice cover, the evaporation will continue ’til spring. If that happens, Yorde says ships will carry lighter loads. And they’ll take more trips, which would cost extra money for shipping companies at the Twin Ports.
