Mayville Football Looking To Build Off Spring Season.

After a short offseason the Mayville High School football team is getting ready for the 2021 campaign.

Head Coach Scott Hilber’s went 5-2 during the alternate-spring season that wrapped up in May.

“The best thing about it (the spring season) was getting our seniors an opportunity to get out.  It was really kind of touch and go when the fall season got postponed.” Hilber told DailyDodge.com “A lot of our seniors thought they were done and they never were going to be able to play. Thankfully we were able to play.”

Hilber says that his returning players retained much of the information they were taught in the spring.

“Everything is pretty fresh in the kids minds and we’ve seen that this week and the learning curve is a lot less and I hope we will be able to evolve a lot quicker as an offense.”

The Cardinals have over 50 athletes out of for football this year, that includes seven or eight starters on both sides of the ball, including four on the offensive line.   There are 17 seasons on this year’s squad and Coach Hilber is really looking for leadership from that group.

“I’ll be honest we don’t exactly know who are leaders are yet.” Hilber said. “I still got to see that.  We know who are bodies are.  We know who are skill guys are and we know who the strong guys are.  We know where we are going to get production, but leadership is so incredibly important.”

The Cardinals return the to rusher from the spring in Blake Schraufnagel who ran for nearly 700 yards and nine touchdowns.   The Cardinals top receivers are also back including Braeden Vollmer and Adison Mittelstadt.

Schraufnagel led the Mayville defense with four interceptions while the team’s top tackler Andrew Thom and top sack-man Bradley Buschke also return.

The Cardinals open up their 2021 season on Friday, August 20th when they head to Cedar Grove-Belgium.
