Mayville Edged In D5 State Football Final

The Mayville High School football team was nipped by Lacrosse Aquinas 28-26 on Thursday at Madison’s Camp Randall Stadium in the WIAA Division 5 State Championship Game.

The Cardinals trailed 16-0 early in the 2nd quarter, but scored 20 straight points to take 20-16 lead midway through the 3rd quarter.  Blake Schraufnagel scored on TD runs of 21 and two yards in the 2nd quarter to cut the Blugold lead to 16-14 at the half.  With 5:43 left in the 3rd Ty Hockers plunged in from 1 yard out, giving Mayville the 20-16 lead.

Aquinas rallied back to take a 28-20 lead early in the 4th quarter.  Mayville answered with another Ty Hockers TD run with 1:31 left but the two point conversion was stopped inches from the goal line.  Blake Schraufnagel had 38 carries for 206 yards and a pair of TDS.  As a team the Cardinals piled up 306 rushing yards.
