The Mayville High School football team was nipped by Lacrosse Aquinas 28-26 on Thursday at Madison’s Camp Randall Stadium in the WIAA Division 5 State Championship Game.
The Cardinals trailed 16-0 early in the 2nd quarter, but scored 20 straight points to take 20-16 lead midway through the 3rd quarter.  Blake Schraufnagel scored on TD runs of 21 and two yards in the 2nd quarter to cut the Blugold lead to 16-14 at the half. With 5:43 left in the 3rd Ty Hockers plunged in from 1 yard out, giving Mayville the 20-16 lead.
Aquinas rallied back to take a 28-20 lead early in the 4th quarter. Mayville answered with another Ty Hockers TD run with 1:31 left but the two point conversion was stopped inches from the goal line. Blake Schraufnagel had 38 carries for 206 yards and a pair of TDS. As a team the Cardinals piled up 306 rushing yards.
The Cardinals (11-3) collect their 4th state runner-up trophy in their 5th trip to the state finals. There only title came back in 1994. Aquinas finishes with a perfect 14-0 record.
