The Mayville boys basketball team (Overall: 7-10, Flyway: 3-6) has won three games in a row as they head down the homestretch of the season. All three of the wins in the streak have gone down to the wire including a 59-53 win against Watertown Luther Prep, a 59-57 victory at St. Mary’s Springs and a 60-58 win this past Monday night at Markesan. Against the Hornets, freshman Adison Mittelstadt finished off a 24-point night with the game winning layup with :03 seconds left in regulation.
Mittelstadt along with senior Emmit Hurtienne lead Cardinals in scoring at about 12 points per game. Senior Joseph Adamson scores 11 points and pulls down about 9 rebounds per contest.
Coach Matt Hurtienne says that it took his team a while to get comfortable with his European ball screen offense which puts all five players on the floor in position to score. He adds that on defensive end of the floor, his team has really got after it with the run and jump system. Hurtienne says that all 12 players on his roster have contributed to his team’s success this season. Two young men that have been playing well, but don’t necessarily show up in the box score are sophomore Jimmy Held and junior Zach Weiss.
The Cardinals will head to Rosendale for a Flyway Conference matchup with Laconia on Friday night.
