Markesan Police Warn Of Publisher’s Clearinghouse Scam

(Markesan) Markesan Police are warning residents about a scammer using the Publisher’s Clearing House sweepstakes to try and cheat people out of their earnings. It’s that time of year for the sweepstakes and a scammer is sending out letters saying the person won $350,000 and is enclosing a check for $4,950 to cover legal and administrative fees. You’re supposed to cash the check at your bank and send the money to them before the rest of your prize is released. But the check is a fake and if you do so your financial institution will expect you to make good on the money. Police say the bottom paragraph of the letter tells you not to discuss your winnings with everyone.
