Madison Cuts Overture Center Budget

10/6/11 – Mayor Paul Soglin’s budget for Madison would maintain basic services and avoid layoffs of city workers, but it would cut funding for the city’s Overture Center. The city pledged almost two million dollars last year when it agreed to let the nonprofit organization take over management of the arts center. Soglin’s budget plan cuts that figure by 30 percent. The proposal also raises property taxes. Other items include eliminating vacant positions on the city staff and possible furloughs for assistant city attorneys.
