Jury Convicts Waupun Correctional Inmate In 2019 Violent Assault Of A Corrections Officer

(Juneau) A Dodge County jury found a Waupun Correctional inmate guilty Thursday of violently assaulting a corrections officer. Timmy Johnson was convicted on a felony charge of Battery by Prisoner. The court also dismissed Johnson’s not guilty by reason of metal defect plea due to a lack of evidence.

A guard was passing out medication in June of 2019 while Johnson attempted to hide his own pills, in violation of prison rules. Johnson then confronted the officer over a report about him hiding his medication and became angry. The 33-year-old beat the officer repeatedly, striking him in the head over 20 times.

The defendant stopped the assault after getting pepper-sprayed and wrestled to the ground by other responding guards. The victim was seriously injured but recovered and was able to return to work several days later.

Johnson has been incarcerated since 2014 when he was sentenced to 50 years in prison on numerous charges including First-Degree Reckless Homicide, Kidnapping, and Armed Robbery. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for August 18th.
