State Makes $8M Available For Propane Shortage
1/28/14 – Governor Scott Walker is making eight-and-a-half million more dollars available to help low-income Wisconsinites get the propane fuel they need to stay warm. Walker announced more aid for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, after he met Monday with industry leaders and his cabinet on the acute propane shortage. He also granted eight-million-dollars in temporary lines of credit to propane distributors, so they can pay for their own supplies. Walker said he asked state agencies to quote, “assist as appropriate” to help a quarter-million Wisconsin propane customers deal with skyrocketing fuel prices — and shortages that are causing propane companies to scramble to find enough fuel. The state’s Economic Development Corporation will handle that end of the matter — as well as WHEDA, the Wisconsin Housing-and-Economic Development Authority. In the meantime, Walker is urging folks to conserve when possible — and keep track of their propane supplies closely. U-S Senate Democrat Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin has urged President Obama to get involved. She wants Obama to order companies to moderate their exports, to make sure Americans have enough propane to make it through.
Former Waupun Cop Appears In Green Lake Court
1/28/14 – A former Waupun police officer connected to a multi-county crime spree made his Initial Appearance in a Green Lake County courtroom Monday. Bradley Young is charged there with six felonies including Burglary, Possession of Burglary Tools, Criminal Damage to Property and Taking a Vehicle Without the Owners Consent. On August 5, he allegedly broke into the Walkers Kohlerville Restaurant in the Town of Green Lake, triggering an alarm. Responding deputies spotted someone fitting Young’s description fleeing from the building. He then reportedly stole a pick-up from a Green Lake residence and headed to northwest Wisconsin where he crashed the truck in a police chase in Barron County. Young then stole a car in Rice Lake and broke into a Burnett County cabin. He was eventually surrounded by SWAT teams from three counties, called 9-1-1 to turn himself in and was taken to jail without further incident. He previously made court appearances in Burnett and Barron counties. A Green Lake County judge set a cash bond at $50,000 and he has a status hearing there next month.
Charges Filed Following Waupun Prison Bomb Threat
1/28/14 – A Milwaukee woman is accused of calling in a phony bomb threat at the Waupun Correctional Institution, and then calling back a few minutes later to apologize. Fratrina Harris is charged with one felony count of Bomb Scare for the incident December 8 that resulted in the institution going into “lockdown.” The 34-year-old blocked her phone number when she dialed the prison around 9am and said a bomb would go off at 3:30pm that afternoon. Investigators were able to obtain the source number from the phone company. However, because it was a no-contract, pay-by-the-month phone there was no record of the owner. Milwaukee Police eventually located the number in their internal records because of prior contact with the Harris family. Harris repeatedly denied her role in the bomb threat. After her phone was confiscated for forensic analysis, she contacted detectives and confessed saying she was upset her girlfriend was regularly visiting an inmate and the bomb threat was meant to get the woman’s attention. A search of the web history on her phone revealed that she had conducted an internet search for (quote) “What happens when Wisconsin prison receive a bomb threat.” The felony charge carries a three-and-a-half year maximum prison sentence, if she is convicted.

Walker Has Edge Over Burke In Marquette Poll
1/28/14 – Governor Scott Walker has a six-point lead over his Democratic challenger Mary Burke in the first Marquette Law School poll of 2014. The Republican Walker was endorsed by 47-percent of the 802 registered voters surveyed. Burke, the former state Commerce Secretary and Trek Bicycle executive, got 41-percent. The poll was released Monday afternoon, and was conducted from last Monday through Thursday. About seven of every eight voters were surveyed before last week’s State-of-the-State address, in which Walker proposed over a half-billion dollars in property-and-income tax cuts. Walker’s lead is beyond the poll’s three-and-a-half percent margin of error. Pollster Charles Franklin noted that Walker’s support was the same as last October, at 47-percent. Burke was at 45-percent, but it was pointed out at the time that many people were not envisioning an exact Democratic challenger to Walker. Burke has become more well-known since then, while another potential Democratic hopeful — Kathleen Vinehout — said she would not run for governor.
