Jefferson Woman Killed in Town of Clyman Accident

1/20/14 – A one-vehicle accident in the Town of Clyman claimed the life of a Jefferson woman Sunday morning. Dodge County Sheriff Pat Ninmann says the preliminary investigation shows that a Chevrolet Impala was traveling north on County M around 9am. The driver โ€“ a 77-year-old Jefferson man โ€“ lost control and slid-off the snow-covered and slippery road. The vehicle struck the railroad signal gate crossing just south of County J. The driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by EMS to Watertown Hospital. His 77-year-old female passenger was transported by Flight for Life to Aurora Medical Center in Summit where she was pronounced dead by the emergency room physician. The name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The accident remains under investigation by the Dodge County Sheriffโ€™s Office Crash Investigation Team.

The manager of the McDonalds on East Avenue called authorities around 8:30pm Sunday night reporting that a man came into the restaurant stating that he was going to kill someone, then locked himself in the bathroom. When a deputy arrived on scene, the subject urged the deputy to shoot him. He was taken into custody and turned over to Fond du Lac County officials for his role in a prior incident earlier in the day.

Competency Exam Ordered For County Supervisor

1/19/14 – A Dodge County Board supervisor is free on a signature bond, after his arrest Thursday in the assault of his wife.ย  The attorney for 83-year-old Donald Gunderson entered innocent pleas to Battery and Disorderly Conduct.ย  A mental exam was ordered to determine if Gunderson is competent to help with his defense.ย  He was arrested at his home after the victim’s son called authorities.ย  The woman told officers that her husband was quote, “out of control” — and she was afraid he would kill her. Investigators say Gunderson when to bed at 6:30pm and told his wife to come to bed a couple hours later — and when she refused he told her to “quit belly-aching” and struck her in the head and shoulder. She is said to be in the early stages of Alzheimer’s.ย  His daughter told investigators that he had his own “dementia incident” last July.ย  Gunderson said he did not need to make a statement to officers about the alleged assault, and said he quote, “knew the sheriff.”ย  A Washington County prosecutor is handling the case to avoid any conflict-of-interest.ย  Gunderson represents the Lomira-area.ย  He previously decided not to seek re-election in April, after 40 years as a county supervisor.

Zone Two in northeast Dodge County is the latest to open and joins the southern half of the county along with the ATV trail on the Wild Goose State Trail from Highway 60 to Highway 49. The northwestern quadrant of the county โ€“ which includes the Beaver Dam, Fox Lake and Waupun area โ€“ remains closed. Bar, Gas Station Deer Registration Could End

ย

1/20/14 – Deer hunters and the businesses they patronize are both crying foul over a plan to end deer registrations at places like bars and gas stations.ย  On Wednesday, the state Natural Resources Board will consider a proposal to start registering catches over the phone and online.ย  It’s among the dozens of suggestions from James Kroll, the governor’s “Deer Czar,” to boost hunting in Wisconsin.ย  It was proposed in the name of efficiency — but bars fear it will take away business, and hunting groups say we’ll loss some of the tradition and camaraderie among hunters after they turn in their tags and swap stories over a cold one.ย  The phone and Internet registrations would begin this fall, and the conversion would be complete by 2015.ย  It would save 182-thousand dollars the D-N-R now spends to run 626 deer reporting stations.ย  D-N-R staffers also say it would count the harvest faster, and make it more convenient for hunters.ย  A few randomly-selected hunters would still register in person, so parts of their animals could be tested for chronic wasting disease.ย  Agency staffers say bars could set up Internet terminals to help hunters register — but tavern owners say those people will just register with their smartphones someplace else.ย  The Wisconsin Conservation Congress generally supports Kroll’s recommendations — but some members think more hunters will simply not register their kills.

GOP May Split on Surplus Plan

1/20/14 – There might not be enough votes in the Wisconsin Senate to approve the type of large-scale tax cut that Governor Scott Walker’s been talking about.ย  At least two Republicans say they’d rather use a projected billion-dollar surplus to avoid a structural deficit in the next budget starting in mid-2015.ย  We learned last week about the projected surplus, and the Republican Walker says he wants to give most of it back to taxpayers.ย  But with only a three-vote majority, Republicans would not be able to approve a major tax cut if more than one G-O-P senator strays from the party line — and that’s already happened.ย  Green Bay Republican Rob Cowles (coles) says he’s “urging caution,” considering the deficits from the recent past.ย  Ripon Republican Luther Olsen said voters are telling him to be smart and quote, “Don’t just pander for the next election.”ย  At last word, Wisconsin’s fiscal obligations will create a 725-million dollar shortfall in the next budget.ย  Walker says he’s not too concerned, and neither are Assembly Republicans.ย  G-O-P Finance co-chair John Nygren says it’s been proven that tax cuts generate enough economic growth to wipe out structural deficits in subsequent budgets.
