Husty Boys Ready For D5 State Semifinal

The Hustisford boys basketball team will face Wauzeka-Steuben Thursday morning in a WIAA Division 5 State Semifinal in LaCrosse.

The Falcons (16-3) punched their ticket to the programs first ever trip to the state tournament with a pair of blowout wins in the Sectional.  Husty pounded Stockbridge 82-28 in the Sectional Semifinal before pasting #1 seed Monticello 70-43 in the Sectional Final.  Northern Michigan recruit Dylan Kuehl leads a high scoring offense that has averaged nearly 70 points per game.  Kuehl, a finalist for the wissports.net “Top Senior Wing” Award leads the team in scoring at 23 points per game.  Junior Gavin Thimm (14.5) and senior Alex Eggelston (10.8) also average in double figures for the Falcons.

“They are really happy and so excited and so amazed that we are at this point, but they’re not going to settle for just going to state. They’re going to give 100% in every game.  I can sense that.”  Coach Otto Hopfinger tells DailyDodge.com.  “Our only goal right now is to win that first game. Then we will change our goals after that.  Our only concern right now is Wauzeka-Steuben and we are going to do everything we can to prepare at the highest level to take care of business against them.”

Wauzeka-Steuben (16-2) is making their second trip to state in program history.  Their only other appearance can in 2011 when they lost in the semifinals.  The Hornets downed Royal 46-41 in last Saturday night’s Sectional Final to punch their ticket to the D5 Semifinals.  Upper Iowa recruit Gavin Ralph leads Wauzeka-Steuben in scoring (18.9), rebounds (10.1) and assists (5.1).  Sophomore Caydon Lomas (11.6) and junior Garett Kapinus (11.1) also score in double figures for the Hornets.  Wauzeka-Steuben won the Ridge & Valley Conference with a perfect 10-0 record.

The Falcons and Hornets will tip off at 9:05am on Thursday morning in LaCrosse.   McDonell Central and Green Bay NEW Lutheran will face off at 12:35pm in the other semifinal  The WIAA Division Five State Championship Game will be played later that night at 7:05pm.
