Governor Vetoes Three Republican Tax Credit Bills

(Madison) Governor Tony Evers has vetoed three Republican authored tax bills. The democratic governor has twice previously vetoed tax cuts from Republicans. In a statement, Evers said the three measures totaling $800-million-dollars would have driven the state into insolvency and threatened services.

The bills included expansion of the state’s second income tax bracket to cover higher earners, an increase in the income tax credit for married couples, and an increase in the amount of retirees’ income exempt from the state income tax.

State Representative Mark Born said Evers showed his true hypocrisy by vetoing a tax cut that solely reduced the tax rate on income up to $150-thousand-dollars for married joint filers. The Beaver Dam Republican added the governor also vetoed legislation that would have provided significant relief for those on fixed incomes and helped correct marriage penalties in the tax code.

Evers did not mention a fourth Republican bill, an expanded tax credit for couples with children.
