The Beaver Dam boys hockey team rolled by Baraboo/Portage 6-2 on Tuesday night in their Badger North finale at the Family Center Ice Arena. After a scoreless 1st period the Thunderbirds struck 1st when Will Gunnell lit the lamp at 6:16 of the 2nd period. That lead lasted until 15:36 of the period when Dalton Jones tucked one inside the right post for a power play goal. Less than a minute later at 16:29 junior Ian Conlin went five-hole to beat goalie Dane Hinz to give BD the 2-1 lead heading into the 2nd intermission.
The 3rd period was all BD, as goals by Riley VanderHoeven and Conlin made it 4-1. Ben Cremers then added two goals of his own to push the lead to 6-1. Campbell Koseor scored at 14:56 to Baraboo/Portage’s final goal of the night.
Junior Kirk Davis made 33 saves to earn his 8th win of the season. Junior Riley VanderHoeven registered 4 points on the night (1G, 3A) to tie the all-time BDHS single season points record at 56. He matched Nick Sirota, who scored 56 points in the 2001-02 season.
It was Senior Night on Tuesday and during the 2nd intermission the program took time to honor the team’s six seniors; Dalton Jones, Josh Stuebe, Ben Cremers, Garrett Pasewald, Jeffrey Bemis, and Daniel Smolen.
The Golden Beavers have won four straight and finished Badger North play at 6-3-1 which puts then in 3rd place behind Sauk Prairie and conference champ Waunakee.
Beaver Dam (14-7-2) will wrap up the regular season on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Onalaska for a matchup with Aquinas/Holman. The puck will drop at 4:30pm.
The Golden Beavers have drawn a #7 seed in the upcoming WIAA Division One Hockey Playoffs and will host #10 seed Appleton United next Tuesday night at the Family Center. The puck drops at 7pm.
