(Mayville) The grand opening for phase one of the Gold Star Memorial Trail is Saturday. The ten-foot wide paved trail – so named to honor local fallen veterans – extends two miles from Mayville’s Theiler Park to the Horicon Marsh Visitor Center, running along County Highway TW and State Highway 28.
Andrew Johnson with the Gold Star Memorial Trail says the festivities will take place at Theiler beginning at 9am with a dedication ceremony starting at 10am. He says the Patriot Guard Riders from the Appleton Chapter will be in attendance. Johnson says the ceremony will also recognize those who helped raise more than $740,000 in donations over the last five years to make the trial a reality. Visitors will be able to view the Fallen Angel Tribute Truck display which features all the names of military members from Wisconsin who were killed in action.
Johnson says Army Chaplain Colonel Douglas Fleischfresser will be the keynote speaker. He says Fleischfresser is a combat chaplain and has served three different tours and has been awarded a Bronze Star. The goal of phase two is to bring the trail to Beaver Dam.
