Fox Lake Citizens Have Gathered “More Than Enough” Signatures for Referendum to Detach from Waupun School District

(Fox Lake) Members of a citizens group seeking to have Fox Lake detach from the Waupun School District say they’ve got more than enough signatures to force the issue to referendum. Tim Meekma, with Concerned Area Residents for Education, says the group met Tuesday night and determined that they had over 850 signatures. CARE finalized the petition earlier this month; the state requires it be signed by 10-percent of the registered voters in the Waupun district. Meekma says they will present the signatures to the Waupun School Board prior to the second Tuesday in September. The issue of detachment first presented itself earlier this year after a referendum to cover a budget deficit of more than 1-million-dollars failed in Waupun leading to the closure of three elementary schools, including Fox Lake. The group is still collecting signatures and will continue to do so until the petition is submitted.
