(Waupun) Few details have emerged in a death at Waupun Correctional Institution. Donald Maier died at the facility on February 22nd.
The 62-year-old was charged in the 1985 stabbing death of a man in Wisconsin Rapids, according to Department of Corrections records cited by the Journal Sentinel. A notice in the Wisconsin Rapids Tribune stated that Maier died in his sleep.
Maier is the fourth Waupun inmate to die at the prison since last June. The deaths of Tyshun Lemons and Cameron Williams are under investigation while Dean Hoffmann killed himself while in solitary confinement. Waupun Correctional has made national headlines due to lockdowns as a result of staffing shortages as well as federal lawsuits filed by inmates and a relative of Hoffman’s.
According to the state’s Department of Corrections website, the prison has a vacancy rate of 56.2-percent which is the highest among maximum security facilities. Waupun is set to get additional support with the recent graduating class from the DOC’s staff training program.
