Fond Du Lac Authorities Identify Jane Doe’s Remains

(Fond du Lac) The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office has identified the body of a woman found dead over 13 years ago. Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt says through the hard work and dedication of detectives and others who are now retired, the remains have been positively identified as Amy Yeary of Rockford, Illinois.

Yeary was born on December 9, 1989 and would have been 18-years-old when she died in 2008. Waldschmidt says her body was identified using comparison of DNA from her mother, comparison of DNA from her sister, and a comparison of dental x-rays.

Yeary’s body was discovered by deer hunters in a shallow creek in the southern part of the county, in the Town of Ashford, on November 23, 2008. Three years later, she was buried in a Waupun Cemetery. Yeary’s body was exhumed in 2018 and samples were collected and sent to numerous laboratories for testing. Genealogy research led investigators to locate individuals believed, later confirmed, to be related to Yeary.

Waldschmidt says Yeary’s mother told investigators that in the late summer of 2008, her daughter called and said she was in Beloit and wanted a ride home. Yeary’s mother, who was living in northern Illinois at the time, was not able to pick up her daughter due to extenuating circumstances. The family never heard from Yeary again. Waldschmidt says while no official missing person report was ever filed, Yeary’s family continued their own search, hoping to eventually contact her. He says identifying Amy Yeary is a big step in this active investigation, however there is still much work that needs to be done.

Investigators continue to wait results of additional tests currently being performed at forensic laboratories and are hopeful new evidence can be identified. Authorities have also learned that Yeary was a victim of human sex trafficking. Waldschmidt says Yeary was oftentimes transient and had spent time in the Chicago, Beloit, and Milwaukee-areas in the weeks leading up to her death.

Anyone who knew Yeary, has knowledge surrounding her death, or knows how or why she would have traveled to southeastern Fond du lac County in the summer of 2008 is asked to contact Detective Ryan Murphy at 920-929-3380 or call the Fond du Lac County Law Enforcement Tip Line at 920-906-4777 and leave an anonymous message. Waldschmidt says it is their hope that with public assistance they can determine what happened to Yeary and bring justice to her memory.
