Fire Causes Significant Damage To Waupun Duplex

(Waupun) Fire caused significant damage to a Waupun duplex early Saturday. Crews responded to 540 East Jefferson Street at 12:33am after an individual who was visiting the downstairs tenant noticed the building was on fire.  Fire Chief BJ DeMaa says everyone had safely evacuated before emergency officials got on scene.

Upon arrival, flames were venting out the second story windows. The fire was knocked down within 30 minutes and firefighters remained on scene for around two hours working on overhaul.

The home, which is owned by Ben Harper, sustained significant smoke and fire damage to the second floor as well as water damage to the first floor and basement. Damage estimates were not immediately known. No injuries were reported.

In total, six individuals were displaced by the blaze and they are staying with family and friends in the area. The cause of the fire remains under investigation and is not considered suspicious at this time. Agencies assisting at the scene included the Waupun Police Department, Lifestar Ambulance, Waupun Utilities, and Alliant Energy.
