Gumdrop Gems

1 c. shortening

¾ tsp. vanilla extract

½ c. white sugar

½ c. packed brown sugar

2 eggs

2 c. sifted all-purpose flour

½ tsp. baking soda

½ tsp. salt

1 ½ c. quick cooking oats

48 small gumdrops

Preheat oven to 375º. Cream shortening with vanilla. Add sugars gradually, creaming well. Add eggs and beat thoroughly. Sift flour, soda and salt together; add to creamed mixture and mix well. Stir in oats. Shape dough into balls and put on greased cookies sheets. Make hollow in each ball and place a gumdrop in each hollow. Bake 10-12 minutes. Yield: 48 cookies.
