September 21 @ 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Beaver Dam AAUW offers “A Community Dialogue About Racism and Prejudice”

At the request of the Beaver Dam AAUW branch, Craig Warmbold, Director of Operations, WBEV, will facilitate a panel of eight community representatives to present the program, “A Community Dialogue About Racism and Cultural Prejudice” on Wednesday, September 21, 7 PM, at the BDACT Fine Arts Center, 117 W. Maple Ave., Beaver Dam. The panelists, who will participate in a discussion using the book, “So You Want to Take About Race” by ijeoma Oluo as a springboard, include Elisha Barudin, Racial Justice Group; Laura Goral, Habitat for Humanity Restore/ BD Playground Movement; John Kreuziger, Beaver Dam Chief of Police; Leslie Laster, Moraine Park Technical College Director for Diversity, Accessibility and Support Services; Danette Machmueller, Racial Justice Group; Julio Molina, Community Case Manager, Dane County Department of Human Services; Rob Meyer, Director of Teaching and Learning, Beaver Dam Unified School District; and Aryana Barudin, a recent Marquette University graduate in Social Anthropology.

According to AAUW’s Diversity/Equity/Inclusion chair, Annette Kamps, the purpose of the program is “to increase the community’s awareness of the cultural diversity in the community, to celebrate that diversity, to support inclusiveness, and to foster cooperative efforts that address racism and bigotry wherever it may exist.” She emphasized that the general public is invited to attend and that reading the book is not required. “Although we encourage reading the book, it is not needed to get the full benefit of the panelists’ presentation. Their introductory thoughts about the book will lead to a larger discussion about the community’s role in addressing racism and bigotry.”
