Need help falling asleep at night? Take a swig of cherry juice. If you drink a glass of tart cherry juice every morning and evening, you’ll likely sleep better at night, according to researchers from Louisiana State University. The volunteers who participated in this study, all of whom suffered from insomnia, drank eight ounces of the juice for just two weeks and increased their sleep time by nearly 90 minutes, compared to a placebo. It’s not exactly known what element in the juice aids sleep. It could be due to the melatonin or the ruby red pigments in tart cherry juice, known as proanthocyanidins. In the study, tart cherry juice helped to increase the availability of tryptophan, an essential amino acid and a precursor to serotonin that helps with sleep. The juice was shown in cells to inhibit an enzyme that degrades tryptophan. Tryptophan degradation is a known predictor of insomnia and is also related to inflammation.
