Dr. Theodore M. Rowan, age 97 of Beaver Dam joined his wife of 65 years on Tuesday, December 31, 2024.
Imagine growing up in a depression, attending medical school, walking down the aisle, sailing across the Atlantic to Ellis Island, and starting a family all within the first thirty years of their lives. Dr. Theodore Rowan accomplished all this and more. His life endeavors created much success, wisdom, and dedication which have been admired and honored by all those who love him. Theodore Rowan was born on September 29, 1927 near London. He grew up during World War II which caused people to ration certain foods and items. Everyone had to tend gardens in order to put food on the table. Even these hardships could not damper his drive for success. After joining the Royal Navy for two years he was able to receive degrees from both Cambridge and Oxford before attending Bedford School for pre-med. Theo then worked hard to follow up his medical education by working at Guy’s Hospital the University of London. Around this time, he met Jennifer Harris, and they were eventually blessed with three children and long-lasting love. Theo continued to spend a successful six months interning at Special South Hampton General Hospital in England before he and Jennifer decided to work their way to America.
The couple traveled aboard The Queen Mary bound for Ellis Island. The move sprouted new possibilities for Theo to gain wisdom among his current success. He continued his medical experiences by interning and participating in residency at the Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. He studied pathological anatomy and clinical pathology from 1957-1961, before finally receiving his medical degree. His hard work paid off. His strong medical education brought him to Beaver Dam where he co-founded the Consultant Physicians Pathology Lab. This lab grew to eventually involve seven partners, it was the beginning of nuclear medicine in Beaver Dam and dialysis in nearby Waupun, and they even had their own plane and pilot available to transport specimens around the state.
After having an extremely successful career as a doctor and leader, he retired in 1991. In retirement, he chose to dedicate his time to his family and traditions, which included his famous “sidecar” drink recipe served every Christmas. Theo was a wonderful host, hosting many fun-filled dinner parties with his family and friends. He enjoyed making and tasting wine throughout the years. He also found the time to travel with his wife and visit relatives and friends in England. He set a goal to stand foot on every continent, just missing Antarctica.
Theo is survived by his son, Jonathan (Lisa) Rowan of Beaver Dam, and their daughters, Britta Rowan, Cobby (fiancé, Ryan Eichhorst) Rowan, and Brie (Gustavo Mora) Rowan; his son, Jeremy Rowan of Madison; and his daughter, Rebecca (Gerett) Kratz of Beaver Dam and her son, Tristan Barrow; and further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jennifer; his siblings; and other relatives.
In honoring Theo’s wishes, private family services will be held.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to good friend and dedicated caregiver, Ena Smith; loyal friend, Linda Diels; along with Rev. Chris Davis and the Grace Presbyterian family.
