Downtown Beaver Dam Banners Would Honor Local Veterans

(Beaver Dam) The Beaver Dam American Legion Auxiliary is promoting a new effort that seeks to honor area veterans. The 2020 Beaver Dam Veterans Honor Walk Banner Program will feature a veteran with their photo, name, branch of service and credentials on the banner. Auxiliary member Lois Levenhagen says the initiative got started by local eagle scout Luke Diljak who wanted to recognize veterans for more than just one day a year.

To be considered for a banner the nominee must have served in one of the seven military branches and had been honorably discharged or died in the line the of duty. The cost is $300 each which Levenhagen says includes a special booklet that will include a map of all veterans and where their banners are. She says people can take walking tours and see each one.

The thirty-by-seventy-inch banners and will be on display along Front and Spring Streets from July to November. Levenhagen says families will be invited to a dinner and ceremony after the banners are taken down. She says they will be able to keep them afterwards.
