7/6/17 – Dodge County Treasurer Patti Hilker is urging property owners with unpaid taxes to get them paid before they face foreclosure. Hilker says the start of the foreclosure process is about 60 days away for those who still have outstanding tax bills from three years ago. After September 1, real estate parcels with unpaid 2014 taxes will begin to accrue additional charges for title searches and publication fees. She says by early next spring, the county will take property which has unpaid 2014 taxes. The so-called “In rem” tax foreclosure process is triggered when there are outstanding unpaid real estate taxes, special assessments, special charges or special taxes remaining on Dodge County’s “sale date,” which is the first working day in September of the year taxes are due. At that time, the Dodge County Treasurer issues a tax certificate to Dodge County for the property as provided in state statute. This means if a property owner fails to pay the outstanding charges, ownership of the property could eventually transfer to the county. Hilker says the best thing taxpayers can do to avoid tax foreclosure is pay real estate taxes on time. Postponed second installment real estate payments are due at the end of this month. She strongly suggests mailing payments to her office as soon as possible to insure a timely payment. The US Postal Service recommends mailing First Class mail at least seven days prior to the due date to ensure on-time delivery.
