Dodge County Sheriff To Post OWI Mug Shots On Facebook

(Juneau) The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office is rolling out a new policy meant to discourage drivers from getting behind the wheel while under the influence. Sheriff Dale Schmidt says his office will highlight on social media individuals arrested for Operating While under the Influence. He says those offenses can include alcohol or drugs as well as prescription medications that are impairing.

Schmidt says this policy ties into their crash reduction strategy in the hopes of minimizing serious accidents and fatalities. During a recent appearance on WBEV’s Community Comment, Schmidt highlighted what information will be shared over social media. He says a photo of the individual, date and time of arrest along with the reasoning behind posting the information. Schmidt says he does not want to do this to anyone but he believes it is important to notify the public that those arrested are putting people’s lives at risk by driving under the influence.

The only information that will not be made public on the sheriff’s office Facebook page would be any prior OWI offenses. However, previous convictions are public record in the criminal complaint. No official go-live date was given for the policy but Schmidt anticipates within the next 30 days.
