(Beaver Dam) The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office is reminding motorists about school bus safety with students back in the classroom. Sheriff Dale Schmidt says all vehicles must stop when the bus is stopped, and the lights are flashing red.
“Regardless if you’re coming from in front of them or behind them, you have to stop for [them],” Schmidt says. “[If] they got the yellow lights on, you should be prepared to stop, but once those lights are on and that bus is stopped, you may not pass it.”
Schmidt says that the department will give a very expensive citation. He adds that the department does not need to be present for a citation to be issued.
“The school bus driver may report it to us, give us a statement, and we may issue the citation based on the statement that you didn’t stop for that school bus,” says Schmidt.
The sheriff says the only time you do not have to stop when the school bus has its lights on is while driving on a divided highway.
