(Juneau) The Dodge County Highway Department Commissioner is urging the public to drive carefully in road construction and maintenance zones. This week is National Work Zone Awareness Week and this year’s theme is Safe Work Zones for All: Protect workers, Protect road users. Brian Field says road workers do an important job that benefits everyone and they want to make it home to their families at night. He says drivers are asked to stay alert, patient and give workers additional space to work. In Wisconsin, work zones include maintenance jobs such as crack-filling and pothole repair as well as major highway construction and rehabilitation. Work zones also include emergency response, utility work and municipal projects. Field says several work zone safety tips include eliminating distractions, give yourself extra room, be patient and follow the law. According to preliminary state figures, there were more than 2,400 work zone crashes throughout Wisconsin in 2019 causing 899 injuries and 18 deaths. Work Zone Awareness Week is sponsored by federal, state and local transportation officials to draw attention to the safety needs of road workers during construction season.
