(Juneau) Health officials say it is important for COVID vaccination sites to have a backup wait list. Dodge County Public Health Officer Abby Sauer explains why a wait list can be beneficial to help keep vaccinations on schedule and to not waste doses.
Sauer says a wait list can help when someone does not show up for their appointment, if a person is actually not eligible for the shot or if there is enough in a vial for an extra dose. She says once a vaccine vial is opened health officials only have a few hours to make use of it, noting that the Moderna vaccine is only good for six hours after the seal has been broken.
During a recent appearance on WBEV’s Community Comment, Sauer said if a person is wait-listed they are notified so they can be ready at a moment’s notice. She says they have not yet had to throw away any vaccine doses, adding that they hope to keep it that way.
