DNR: Early Start To Wildfire Season In Wisconsin

(Wisconsin) The fire season is off to an early start in 2024 due to a variety of factors. The traditional season typically starts in April, but this year, fires began popping up in February. More times than not, the fires start in the southern half of the United States and work their way north as snow melts in the beginning of spring.

DNR Wildfire Prevention specialist Catherine Koele said at this point, the quantity of fires is way ahead of the pace set in years past.

“The unique thing here is that on a normal year we’re less than one-hundred fires at this point in the year…so, having over three-hundred versus one-hundred we’re three times the amount of fires this year as opposed to a more traditional year.”

Koele also stated that we are just entering the peak of a typical fire season, so there could be more severe incidents on the way. More information on wildfire prevention is available at the DNR website. Click HERE to visit the site.
