POSITION INFORMATION

Status: Full Time, Non-Exempt
Starting Wage Range: $25.57/hr. – $27.64/hr.

OVERALL PURPOSE/SUMMARY

Under the general direction of Shop Superintendent, performs skilled work in preventive maintenance and mechanical repair of gasoline, diesel and other power-driven equipment.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Inspects, maintains, and repairs all county-owned equipment including, but not limited to, autos, trucks, tractors, graders sweepers, bulldozers, rollers, snow removal equipment and compressors, etc.
Disassembles engines and performs general engine overhaul work.
Analyze ignition/fuel systems.
Overhauls transmissions and differentials.
Replaces wheel cylinders and relines brakes, rebuilds brake cylinders and boosters.
Wires and reconditions electrical systems.
Repairs/replaces components such as generators, alternators, distributors, relays, and air conditioning units.
Performs building and fabricating/construction, maintenance, on all types of equipment.
Makes service calls on equipment to perform emergency vehicle and tire repairs.
Conducts road tests on equipment.
May look up and order parts using department computers and software.
Maintains equipment in clean, orderly and safe condition.
Reads and interprets technical drawings.
May perform welding, brazing, cutting, tire changing or other automotive shop work.
May operate snow and ice control equipment on a limited basis as assigned.
May direct work of others.
May work irregular or staggered shifts
Regular attendance and punctuality required.
Performs related duties as may be required or assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools, and materials used in mechanical trades and the maintenance/repair of light/heavy automotive, construction and maintenance equipment.
Knowledge of safety hazards and relevant safety precautions.
Knowledge of theory, care, and operation of gasoline and diesel engines.
Ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical troubles and determine appropriate maintenance, repair, or replacement work.
Ability to work from technical drawings, sketches, and broken parts, and to fabricate non-standard, specialized equipment.
Ability to use an engine analyzer and laptop computer and PC.
Ability to accurately follow instructions and work well with others.
Ability to keep simple records, log repairs and track work costs.
Must meet requirements of Dodge County Driver Qualification Policy.
Must have forklift certification.
Must furnish your own hand tools.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or GED equivalent, basic computer skills, five (5) years of experience repairing heavy trucks, construction and maintenance equipment specifically diesel/gasoline engines electrical problems and hydraulic systems . Equivalent combination of education and experience which provides necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.

Must possess a valid CDL with Class A, B, D, and N endorsement.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Must be available for emergency call-in 24 hours a day/7 days a week as requested by supervisor.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Works inside and outside in various weather conditions, which may include extreme temperatures (both high and low).
