(Beaver Dam) The deadline for parents to sign their children up for the Shop with Cops event is Friday. The program is geared towards kindergarten age up to 12-to-13-year-olds to help them brighten their holidays and learn a bit about law enforcement.
Retired Waupun Police Department Detective Brian O’Donovan says the event takes young people with economic problems and pairs them with an officer and together they shop at Wal-Mart or Fleet Farm on a $150 budget for their families. O’Donovan says the child will also get to spend a few hours with the officer to asks questions about their job.
Beaver Dam Police Sergeant Jeremiah Johnson says the experience is a wonderful opportunity for both parties. He says they get to know the kids a little bit and give them lifelong memories that cops are here to help people.
Every law enforcement agency in the county works with the Shop with Cops organization to offer opportunities to children across the area.
