(Juneau) The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office is reminding motorists of the dangers of deer being present alongside the roadways as deer hunting season ramps up. Sheriff Dale Schmidt says his number one recommendation is try to avoid hitting deer in the first place.
“I say that with a little bit of jest, but it’s actually serious,” says Schmidt. “What is one way that you can avoid that? Is being a defensive driver again. I remember when I was here in Beaver Dam going through Bestway Driving School back in the day. I still remember the instructor telling us ‘Scan 12 seconds ahead of you.’”
Schmidt says 12 seconds is a long way in the country, but it comes up very quickly. He adds that where there is one deer, there is usually more.
“They usually travel in packs of three or four, and so, if one comes across the road, make sure you’re stopping,” Schmidt says. “I’ve seen it happen where I’m driving down the road, I see a car hit a deer, and then another car hits another deer.”
The sheriff says he has seen other scenarios where a car stops for deer and avoids the first but hits the second.
