(Juneau) The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office has been working with area school districts on a project to install security boxes. The boxes will house keys to district buildings. The goal is to make it easier for law enforcement to gain access to a building in the event of a critical incident.
Sheriff Dale Schmidt says the boxes have worked well with the department staff and he wants to expand them to schools.
“A lot of those police officers have keys to the school, which is good,” says Schmidt. “And they should have keys to the school. But what happens if all the sudden they have a critical incident, a shooting, or something else serious happens in the school. They get into the school, we’re coming to back them up, and now there’s a lockdown, and nobody is getting into that school, and I can’t get in to back up those other officers.”
The sheriff says that same scenario would also apply to other agencies. He adds that the process of installing them will begin soon.
