Council Calling for Sheboygan Mayor to Resign

7/28/11 – The Sheboygan City Council says Mayor Bob Ryan should resign after his second relapse from his treatment for alcohol addiction. The council met as a committee-of-the-whole for almost two-and-a-half hours last night. Afterward, Council President Eric Rindfleisch said the first-term mayor has embarrassed Sheboygan. And if Ryan doesn’t quit, Rindfleisch said the council could take other steps. The mayor admitted having a couple drinks with friends last weekend in Elkhart Lake. But witnesses said Ryan made rude and vulgar remarks toward women – passed out at least once – and got into a shoving match with a bar patron. Ryan was not at last night’s meeting, and has not commented. Rindfleisch said the city is reviewing options that range from censuring Ryan to removing him if a formal complaint is filed. The council leader said Ryan should quit to focus on his addiction and his family, and to let the city of Sheboygan move forward. Ryan sought alcohol treatment after he was seen on You-Tube making sexual remarks about his sister-in-law in a tavern in 2009. He was also accused of making sexual advances to former city human resources director Angela Payne while under the influence. Both occurred during Ryan’s first year in office. Payne filed a complaint with the state, and a hearing is set for mid-August.
