Controlled Burn Spreads in Town of Alto

(Alto)Several area fire departments responded to a structure fire yesterday (Thursday) afternoon in the town of Alto.  The Fond du Lac County Communications Center received a report of a structure fire at W14219 Mielke Rd.  A deputy from the sheriff’s office responded and determined the structure on fire was a small chicken coop.  The fire was started by a family member of the property owner, Beverly Scallon, and was intended to be a controlled burn.  The fire spread from the chicken coop to a surrounding marsh grass area owned by Scallon, ultimately spreading approximately 8 acres before it was contained by responding fire departments.  The chicken coop was destroyed.  Assisting fire departments include: Alto, Brandon, Fairwater, Waupun, Lifestar EMS, Markesan, and Fox Lake.  The fire is not considered suspicious at this time.
