Columbus Officer Injured While Investigating Burglary

A Columbus Police officer was injured Saturday morning after wrestling with a man who fled during a burglary investigation. According to the Columbus Police Department, the incident occurred just before 10am while an officer was investigating a burglary at a business in downtown Columbus. A 21-year-old man entered and was acting suspiciously. The officer and the man walked to an apartment on East James Street and the man fled while being interviewed. The officer chased the man, a brief struggle took place, and the officer fell to the ground and injured his shoulder. A tactical response team was called after the suspect locked himself inside his apartment; it was believed the man could have access to a weapon and that there were other people in the apartment. The suspect and a woman later exited the building without further incident and were taken into custody. Felony charges of Resisting An Officer and Bail Jumping are being referred to the Columbia County District Attorney’s Office. Charges were no immediately sought against the woman. The Columbus Police Department was assisted by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Department and the Wisconsin State Patrol.
