Columbus Football Wins D4 State Title

For the 3rd time in school history, the Columbus High School football team brought home a state championship, knocking off the three-time defending champion Catholic Memorial 23-21 in the WIAA Division Four State Championship Game at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison.    Corbin Hynes’ 31-yard field just over the crossbar with 4:43 left in the fourth quarter gave the Cardinals the lead and the defense held the rest of the way.

Colton Brunell ran 38 times for 186 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Columbus offense that dominated time of possession 34:12 to 19:48 . Nathan Cotter completed 9 of 11 for 92 yards and one TD.  Braxton Nachreiner caught four passes for 53 yards, while Jefferson Mobry hauled in one pass that went for a six yard TD.

The Cardinals finish up a perfect 14-0 season.  It’s the 3rd state championship in program history. They won titles in 1990 and 1996.   Catholic Memorial, who had won championships in 2018, 2019, and 2021, finished up a 13-1
