After a 5-1 alternate-Fall football season in the Rock Valley Small Conference, the Columbus Cardinals are making a quick turn back to the Capitol Conference for the traditional Fall season with a new leader. Longtime Fond du Lac assistant Andy Selgrad was hired as the new head coach Columbus after Calvin Zenz took the head coaching position at Reedsburg.
Coach Selgrad is happy how the program is transitioning into his new system. “We’ve had a lot of really good athletes. They are really hard workers. It’s been a challenge for them as well as the staff to implement some of the newer things we are bringing into the program from Fond du Lac. They have been working really hard and very diligent in learning each nuance as far as the new schemes go.”
Columbus hopes to be contenders in the Capitol Conference if they can continue to learn and develop in the new schemes and play smart football.
“The thing that we have really been working on is the mental side of the game” Selgrad said. “If they can just grasp it mentally, they can play fast and physical. I want to see, how do we adjust when something isn’t quite what we thought it was. Can we just execute the play accordingly? On the defensive side, are we sticking to our keys. Are we reading everything correctly and are we adjusting correctly? And I think from everything we’ve put in, we should be in pretty good shape.”
Columbus brings back a handful of players who earned All-Rock Valley-Small honors last season led by a pair of linebackers. Colton Brunnell was a first team choice while Malani Aragon was a 2nd Team pick at linebacker. Also back are Honorable Mention all-league choices Andrew Pfeffer, Collin Selk, and Braxton Nachriener.
