Columbus Council Discusses Repairs To Boy Scout Cabin

(Columbus) The Columbus City Council discussed the Boy Scout Cabin located in Fireman’s Park at a recent committee of the whole meeting. JSD Professional Services was hired to complete an analysis of the Boy Scout Cabin and a report was presented in 2022.

Last fall, an additional scope of services was done, and it was found that while the structure of the building was good, the rafter tails, fascia boards, gutters and downspouts need to be replaced. While she appreciates the boy scouts willing to help, Alderwoman Sarah Motiff says that some of the work should not be done by the scouts for liability reasons.

“Painting and minor things like that I think are good projects, but any of the repairs I would like to make sure we have done by a licensed professional.”

Scout Troop 99 member Uriah Monday agrees.

“That work I do think needs probably professionals to do right?” says Monday. “You’re talking confined space; you’re talking structural detail.”

Monday is referring to additional support posts being needed to stabilize flooring in the crawlspace in the cabin. He adds that the drainage issue is something that could be talked about with city staff.

“I have some ideas there and those are just sort of from my experience there and as a professional,” Monday says.

After some further discussion, it was determined that the next step would be for city staff to meet with the boy scouts and develop a plan to bring back to a future committee of the whole meeting.
