Columbus Council Discuss Kayak Rental

(Columbus) The Columbus City Council discussed the potential purchase of a four-unit kayak rental at a recent special committee of the whole meeting. The city’s tourism is currently looking to purchase and install the unit from Rent.Fun at Rotary Park near the current kayak launch area.

There is a $19,000-dollar one time activation fee, which would be paid with $9,500 dollars from the Tourism Fund and the other $9,500 dollars being donated by the Columbus/Fall River Rotary Club. Alderwoman Sarah Motiff had several questions about the contract, including the rental fees.

“It talks about that we receive fifty-percent of the gross rental fees received, which is wonderful,” says Motiff. “But then it talks about all the things that they can take out of the fee.”

Motiff says that would include maintenance, replacement, equipment shipping cost, and refurbishment, but adds that contradicts what was stated earlier in the contract.

“I think what the items in B are talking about is if there’s damage to the equipment, we’re not responsible for its repair and replacement, the company is,” City Administrator Matt Amundson says. “I’d be hard pressed to believe that we’d get better terms than that.”

Amundson says that the company would be responsible for paying the cost of repairing and replacing equipment. After some further discussion, it was decided that it would be brought back to the committee of the whole for further discussion. Concerns that would be addressed include the responsibility of the city and the company, where the contract is being governed, where the funds will be going, what equipment will be provided, and the initial rental fee cost.
