Columbia County Authorities Arrest Madison Woman Following Pursuit In Stolen Car

(Portage) Columbia County authorities arrested a Madison woman over the weekend following a pursuit in a stolen vehicle. Sheriff’s deputies were notified just after 2pm Saturday that a vehicle had been stolen from a business in the Town of Pacific and was heading towards Portage.

Roughly 15 minutes later law enforcement spotted the car, and a chase began. The driver, reportedly identified as Chelsea Schwaegerl, blew through several stop signs – some with pedestrians present. The pursuit ended when the vehicle went off the road near Superior Street and was pinned by a squad car.

The 31-year-old allegedly tried to use the stolen car to push the cruiser out of the way but was eventually taken into custody. Authorities say Schwaegerl had drove her own vehicle into the ditch near Highway 16 and 51 earlier in the day and walked to a nearby neighborhood. She attempted to find a phone but was unable to, then reportedly stole the vehicle.

Schwaegerl is facing numerous charges including felony Fleeing, Recklessly Endangering Safety, and Resisting. She was also issued multiple traffic citations.
