City Of Fox Lake To Attempt Grape Kool-Aid Canada Goose Control Method

(Fox Lake) City officials in Fox Lake last Wednesday night agreed to let a local resident spray a non-lethal chemical in and around Claussen Park to repel Canada geese. The decision will not stop a depopulation plan already in place.

The Fox Lake Town Board contracted with the USDA to begin rounding up the geese in mid-June when the geese are molting and cannot fly. The city is contributing $1000, roughly 25-percent of the cost.

Robert Culver of the Town of Fox Lake offered to foot the bill to demonstrate the effectiveness of the non-lethal method which uses a synthetic chemical also found in a grape flavoring used in Jolly Ranchers and Kool-Aid. Mayor Tom Bednarek says any effort that will achieve their goal is worth a try.

Meeting as a committee of the whole, city officials agreed to allow Culver to undertake the application process if he signs a liability waiver; the matter will have to be made official the next time the council is in session. If the effort is successful, the council at a future meeting could discuss the possibility of allocating funding for an annual grape Kool-Aid flavored, goose-repelling application process
