Child Missing After Fort Atkinson Fire Found

(Fort Atkinson) A child who had been reported missing after a fatal house fire in Fort Atkinson has been located.  An amber alert was issued for two year old Emma J. Schoonover following a fire in the 400 block of Foster Street Friday.  The Fort Atkinson Fire Department, alongside the Fort Atkinson Police department were called to the fire Friday morning, where firefighters encountered heavy fire conditions.

Officials say that Elizabeth M. Durkee was seen leaving the scene of the fire with Schoonover.  According to the official DOJ press release, Investigators found the circumstances surrounding the incident suspicious and were concerned for the location and immediate safety of the child.  The amber alert was canceled late Friday evening with Schoonover being located safely.  An un-named suspect is in custody in relation to the fatal fire investigation.

An unidentified woman was found dead inside the home and authorities are still investigating the cause of death.  The DOJ’s Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation, with assistance from Fort Atkinson Police Department. Also assisting are Fort Atkinson Fire Department, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Walworth County Sheriff’s Office, Delavan Police Department, Lake Geneva Police Department, the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office and DOJ Office of Crime Victim Services.
