(Beaver Dam) A Beaver Dam legislator has been named the co-chair of one of the most powerful committees in Madison. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos has appointed State Representative Mark Born as Co-Chair of the Joint Committee on Finance. Born says he is “extremely honored by the opportunity” and discussed with us Wednesday the challenges that lie ahead.
“The biggest one of course is COVID and the economy and how that winds up shaping our revenue,” he says, “it’s been better than a lot of people thought it was going to be but we’re not out of the woods yet.”
Joint Finance is the state’s budget-writing committee. Born got his start in politics on the Beaver Dam Common Council, where he served on the city’s budget committee. He credits those early influences on the city council-level for laying the foundation for his successes in the state legislature.
“Colleagues like Jon Litscher who is certainly a veteran of both state and local government,” he says, “to people like John Somers our budget guy in Beaver Dam when I was there, I certainly learned a lot from a guy like him.”
Born was appointed to the city council’s Administrative Committee by former Mayor Jack Hankes, who just happened to be our guest Wednesday on WBEV’s Community Comment right as news came out about the committee assignment.
“Well first I would congratulate Mark,” Hankes says, “I’ve watched him graduate through various stages of his political career and he’s a pretty good pick for that, very aware of what the state challenges are, he’s very dialed in to the needs of his constituents.”
Born was elected to the State Assembly in 2012 and has served as a member of JFC since 2017.
