The Beaver Dam High School football team picked up a 48-21 opening night victory over Fort Atkinson at Derleth Field Friday night. Josiah Barnes ran for 188 yards and two touchdowns to lead a balanced Golden Beavers offense that also saw Broc Mullenbach and Brandon Morrissey also score two touchdowns.
After Remington Diels blocked punt, Brock Mullenbach scored the first touchdown of the season on a 24-yard TD run around the left side. Fort Atkinson came back with a 16 play, 73-yard drive, capped by an 11 yard TD pass from Rocco Foelker to Breden Hoth. BD answered back early in the 2nd quarter when Josiah Barnes ran one in from three yards out to go up 14-7. Foelker then answered as he hit Mason Ketterhagen on a 48-yard scoring strike up the right sideline. It took Beaver Dam just :58 seconds to answer back as Brandon Morrissey punched one in from two yards out to go up 21-14. The Golden Beavers then went 28-14 just before the half, when Morrissey caught a pass near the goal line, fumbled and recovered the ball in the end zone for his 2nd score of the game.
Parker Blank took the 2nd half kickoff inside the Fort Atkinson 5-yard line, and Mullenbach punched it in for his 2nd score of the game and extend the BDHS lead to 35-14. Beaver Dam then scored through the air on a fourth and four, Eli Bryant hit Jeff Freund on a ten yard TD pass to go up 42-14. Foelker hit Ketterhagen on a 44 yard strike to cut the lead to 41-21, but Barnes scored again for the 48-21 final.
Beaver Dam outgained Fort Atkinson 344-281. 282 of those yards were on the ground. Barnes carried it 23 times for 188 yards to go along with his two touchdowns. Foelker ended up throwing for 228 yards, three touchdowns and one interception by Ashtyn Seifert. Ketterhagen hauled in six passes for 144 yards and two scores.
Beaver Dam (1-0) hosts Baraboo (0-1) next week at HH Derleth Field, while Fort Atkinson heads to Jefferson (0-1).
