Beavers Host Suns In Regional Opener Tonight

The Beaver Dam (Overall: 10-12 Badger North: 5-9) boys basketball team hosts West Bend East tonight in a WIAA Division Two Regional opener.  The Golden Beavers have won three straight games heading into the playoffs, including a 70-61 victory at Baraboo in the regular season finale last Thursday. Tim Ladron’s squad ended up 6th in the Badger North standings this year.   Junior Nate Abel leads BD in scoring this season at 21ppg. Abel was named one of the top 50 “Juniors to Watch” in Wisconsin by Mark Miller’s Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook.  Senior Broden Boschert is at 15ppg while sophomore Tyler Bunkoske scores 11ppg.

 

West Bend East (Overall: 8-14 North Shore: 7-11) rolls into the playoffs on a two-game win streak.  The Suns closed out their regular season with an 83-62 non-conference win over Mount Horeb on February 22nd during the Badger-North Shore Challenge at BDHS and then edged Cedarburg 75-72 in the finale. East was 7th in the North Shore Conference this season.   Junior Sam Gelnich leads Suns in scoring at 16 points per games. Senior Keghan Tighe (13) and junior Dawson Rondorf (11) also score in double figures for East.   Kyle Fueger is in his 4th season as the Suns head coach.

 

The last time these two teams squared off was on February 17th, 2017.   Beaver Dam jumped out to a 55-38 lead at the half and eclipsed the Suns 92-71 in a Wisconsin Little Ten Conference game.  Garrett Nelson led Beaver Dam with 25.  Luke Livingston added 21 and Davis Braker 20.  West Bend East was led by TJ Simpson with a game high 26 points.  Logan Cunningham added 15 & Gage Gerritson 12. The win clinched the final Wisconsin Little Ten championship for Beaver Dam.

 

Beaver Dam is the #8 seed in their Regional while West Bend East is the #9 seed.  The winner of tonight’s game will head to #1 seed and defending Division 2 state champion Nicolet on Friday night in Glendale.  The tip will be at 7pm.
