Junior running back Camron Mendoza ran for 227 yards and five touchdowns, but that wasn’t enough as the Beaver Dam High School football team fell at Milton 33-30 on Friday night.
Milton opened the game with a 13-play drive that ended when Noah McLaughlin hit Brogan McIntrye on a 9-yard halfback option to give the Red Hawks the 7-0 lead in front of their huge Homecoming crowd.
Beaver Dam countered with a 13-play drive of their own that culminated with a two yard Mendoza TD run with 11:13 left in the 1st half. The extra point was missed which allowed Milton to hang on to the 7-6 lead. After a Boston Damon interception, BDHS took their first lead of the game with Mendoza rumbled around the left side 55 yards for a score to grab a 12-7 lead with 9:23 left in the 2nd quarter.
It didn’t take Milton long to respond as Quinn Williams rushed around the right side for a 33 yard score and the 2-pointers gave the Red Hawks a 15-12 lead. Mendoza hit pay dirt for the 3rd time in the 1st half on a 1 yard TD run to give BD an 18-15 lead. Milton came right back and took a 22-18 lead into the halftime locker room when Williams punched it in from 3 yards out.
Beaver Dam opened up the 2nd half with a monster 17-play, 80-yard drive that ended with a 4-yard Mendoza scoring run. Two plays later Milton went back on top when Aiden Schoen connected with Garret Bladl on a 73-yard touchdown strike. The 2-point conversion pushed the Milton lead to 30-24 with 3:17 left in the 3rd.
Milton took advantage of a Beaver Dam turnover to take a 33-24 lead on a 29 yard Schoen field goal with 5:19 left in the game.
Mendoza scored for the 5th time in the game on 1 yard run with 1:42 remaining the game to get within three points. Milton recovered the on-side kick and ran out the clock.
The Golden Beavers outgained Milton 383 to 335 on the night. Along with Mendoza’s 227 rushing yards, Landon Semrau chipped in 44 yards on six carries. Kyler Keel hauled in 4 passes for 91 yards.
Beaver Dam (0-5) travels to Watertown next Friday night in the game that will be the 100th meeting between the two programs. You can watch the game on DailyDodge TV and hear it on 1430 WBEV.
